As England’s first and one of Europe’s largest International Dark Sky Parks (Gold-Tier), Northumberland is now home to its very own Dark Skies Festival.

Special qualities

What are International Dark Sky Parks and International Dark Sky Reserves?

These are two types of designation, awarded by the International Dark-Sky Association that officially recognise certain areas to be naturally dark at night and free of light pollution, and therefore some of the best places in the world to view the beauty of the night sky including our own galaxy, the Milky Way!

We’re proud that six UK National Parks – Exmoor, Brecon Beacons, Moore’s Reserve in the South Downs, Snowdonia, North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales have been awarded International Dark Sky Reserve status. Northumberland, with England’s most pristine dark skies, is an International Dark Sky Park (Gold Tier).

Every year, these National Parks celebrate the amazing night’s sky with Dark Skies Festivals and stargazing opportunities galore. They’re fun events for all the family and one of the highlights of the calendar year.

An ancient wall almost 2,000 years old, and a catch-up with your mate? ✅

Historic landmarks like Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland National Park have been connecting people for centuries.

While that connection looks very different today from the wall’s original role as a Roman defensive fortification, it’s still a place where people come together and explore history.

Because our National Parks are about so much more than great places for a day out. They’re places to connect with friends, clear your head, get active and learn about history, all in one place.

It’s not every day you get to see one of our National Parks in biscuit form on @britishbakeoff!

Last night, The Great British Bake Off contestant @itsdoctoryan created a beautiful biscuit mosaic inspired by the Broads National Park, perfectly capturing the view at St Benet’s Mill, Thurne.

And it wasn’t just a feast for the eyes as the mosaic was made using treacle and ginger, honey and lemon, cocoa and malted milk, and pistachio biscuits.

Two great things combined: a beautiful National Park view and delicious biscuits. What could be better than that? 💚
